Judith Butler, the renowned philosopher from UC Berkeley best known for her work on sex, gender, and identity, delivers the Stanley Fish Lecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago (725 W. Roosevelt, UIC Forum) Friday at 3 PM. Her presentation, “Frames of War,” which shares a title with her upcoming book, will explore how the media’s portrayal of state violence casts the lives of entire populations as already lost and therefore not worthy of serious consideration or grieving, and the sheer existence of those populations as threats to the civilized world.
