Wolfgang Voigt, the German producer and musician known for his prodigious output of ambient and techno, is performing a free concert at 7 PM tonight at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington). Reader critic Jessica Hopper describes his sound as “savage, rolling tones and drones, dark and dreamy in their lushness, pulsing at times with the soft thud of a 70 BPM heartbeat.”

Though he’s already released four albums as Gas, this is Voigt’s first performance as Gas in North America. With only one other U.S. stop on the decidedly minimalist tour, your first chance to see him may also be your last, at least for a long while.
