On Saturday, 7-Eleven celebrates its 82nd birthday by giving away free 7.11-ounce Slurpees while supplies last. In addition, there’s a code on the side of each cup that can be redeemed online for free or reduced price Live Nation concert tickets.

While the company’s celebration of its birthday on July 11 suggests that’s the date it was founded, in fact 7-Eleven’s Web site notes that the chain’s name comes from its (now obsolete) hours of 7 AM to 11 PM, which it switched to in 1946 (before that the stores were called Tote’m).

Free Slurpee day has a more recent provenance; the chain has been serving up the frosty treats for free on July 11 since 2002.
