Kate Jacobsen, the woman behind Shibuy Hada, a longtime presence on the local fashion scene, recently moved her studio from the Gold Coast to the West Loop and took the opportunity to reinvent her aesthetic as well. She’s ditching the Shibuy Hada moniker (which refers to the concepts of subtle beauty and the image we project to the public) and transitioning to her own name. As for her one-of-a-kind and custom designs, which have been characterized by tactile knits, unusual yarns and fibers, and aggressively original, modern shapes, showing influences of Japanese design, DIY craftiness, and Pop Art, she says textiles will continue to be at the center of her work but the designs will be “less fussy, a little more edgy.” She’ll also use more eco-friendly fabrics and fibers (bamboo, organic cotton) and is considering adding items for the home to her repertoire.

The new studio, at 941 W. Randolph, #2E, is open Wednesday through Sunday 11 to 6; call 312-733-6061.
