Mon 1/22:
Logan Square restaurant Daisies (2523 N. Milwaukee) incorporates fermented ingredients and local produce into each of the five courses on offer at the prix fixe Fermentation Dinner. Dishes include beet kombucha and a chocolate ice cream float. 7:30 PM. $65

Tue 1/23: Laura Engelstein appears at Seminary Co-op Bookstore (5751 S. Woodlawn) to talk about her latest book Russia in Flames: War, Revolution, Civil War, 1914-1921, which chronicles the revolution that occurred in Russia after World War I. 6 PM, free

Tue 1/23: At Hungry for Stories at Read/Write Library (914 N. California), Eve L. Ewing discusses Electric Arches, her new, award-winning collection of poetry and visual art. 7-8:30 PM, sold out

Saoirse Ronan stars in the Greta Gerwig film Lady Bird, considered an Academy Awards favorite.

Tue 1/23: The Oscar nominations will be announced beginning Tuesday at 7:22 AM. Later in the day at the Academy Awards Nominations Panel, critics including the Reader‘s J.R. Jones, the Chicago Tribune‘s Michael Phillips, Newcity‘s Ray Pride, and more discuss this year’s hopefuls at the Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State). 4:30 PM, free with RSVP

Wed 1/24: Ensemble Virgin Daiquiri, made up of top Chicago talent, performs fast-paced improv at the iO Theater (1501 N. Kingsbury). 8 PM, free

Thu 1/25: Bedroom cloud rapper Kitty performs at Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western) with Ricky Eat Acid. The Reader‘s Luca Cimarusti praises the artist’s reinvention, describing her last album, Miami Garden Club, as “experimental pop perfection, with a mix of certified bangers and introspective slow jams.” 9 PM. $10

Thu 1/25: The American Writers Museum (180 N. Michigan) rewards the winner of its trivia night with a free one-year museum membership. Drinks are included in the cost of admission. 6:30-8:30 PM, $20
