- Happy is he who is gracious to poor Republican candidates
A paradox about being a Republican politician is that unless you’re independently wealthy, you have to beg for money so you can speak out against people who are begging for money.
Rick Santorum has been a strong voice for the voiceless, so long as they are unborn. For poor people, who don’t vote Republican when they vote at all, he’s offered the standard Republican tough love. During the primary campaign he said that if he were elected president, he’d “go after all of the means-tested entitlement programs—Medicaid, food stamps”—to make sure they were cut. This was not only fiscally prudent, it was for the good of the poor themselves.
Now that he’s aborting his campaign, he’s making it clear that his work’s not nearly done. The work not done is raising yet more cash, because he needs a bailout.
