A starry consortium of Chicago theater folk and others (think Joe Mantegna, William H. Macy, William Petersen, Jim Belushi, George Wendt) is frantically gathering signatures on a last-ditch petition aimed at saving Hull House’s Leo Lerner Theater.

Currently the home of Pegasus Players, the theater, at 4520 N. Beacon St., was central to the development of Chicago’s off-Loop theater scene. Built under the auspices of Hull House’s legendary theater director Bob Sickinger, it has also been the home of both Black Ensemble Theater and the Organic Theater Company.

The current owner plans to turn the building into apartments, and is seeking a zoning change that a City Council committee will vote on June 25. The Consortium to Save Hull House Theater has until then to come up with a plan. Here’s the petition, addressed to Alderman James Cappleman, but sure to be seen by the mayor.
