If you’ve decided to book a ticket to New York to see the Costume Institute’s new exhibit of fashion photography, you might as well head downtown to the International Center for Photography, which has a selection of Richard Avedon’s fashion photos from 1944 to 2000 on display. Although he explored many subjects besides fashion in his long career, for many Avedon was the ultimate fashion photog–he was the inspiration for the Fred Astaire character in the movie Funny Face. I love his 1953 image of Italian socialite Marella Agnelli, which resembles a Renaissance portrait. The New Yorker has a nice slide show of more images.
