While gearing up for their upcoming multimedia project, the rock musical King for a Day, Bobby Conn & the Glass Gypsies have lucked into the sort of publicity you just can’t buy–at least not on their budget. Radar online reports that someone noticed a resemblance between almost certainly hoaxalicious “ex-gay” “musical act” Donnie Davies and Glass Gypsies drummer Colby Starck. Starck denies it. Plausibly.
Meanwhile, with the album set for a February 20 release, Conn is working on videos for all 11 songs, to be directed by local Iraqi-born filmmaker Usama Alshaibi, whose documentary Nice Bombs snagged the top award in that category at last year’s Chicago Underground Film Festival. If you need a fix sooner than that, Conn’s among the acts donating time and proceeds at the J. Robbins benefit Jessica Hopper has organized Saturday night at the Empty Bottle.
