The Washington Post invited Dan Savage to talk about his “It Gets Better” project. In order to be balanced, they also invited Tony Perkins to argue that gay teens don’t kill themselves because of bullying, they do it because obviously being gay is wrong:
Some homosexuals may recognize intuitively that their same-sex attractions are abnormal—yet they have been told by the homosexual movement, and their allies in the media and the educational establishment, that they are “born gay” and can never change. This—and not society’s disapproval—may create a sense of despair that can lead to suicide.
By the way, if you appreciate the It Gets Better series, I recommend the Mountain Goats’ The Sunset Tree. It’s not exactly the same—Darnielle, who is straight (so far as I know) is addressing the abuse he suffered as a child—but it’s basically an album about how it gets better.
