Check out festivals, films, art exhibits, and shows in Chicago this week as August comes to an end.
Through 8/28: As the Rio Olympics close, so does “Nazi Olympics: Berlin 1936,” an exhibition at the Illinois Holocaust Museum (9603 Woods, Skokie) featuring historical photographs, film, and the testimonies of athletes who participated in the Berlin Olympics.
8/22-10/1: Attend today’s opening of “Long View / Long Game” at the College of DuPage’s Gahlberg Gallery (425 Fawell, Glen Ellyn), an exhibition displaying work acquired by the College of DuPage Permanent Art Collection over the past 30 years, including pieces by William Wegman, Jenny Holzer, Rashid Johnson, Cindy Sherman, and Richard Tuttle.
Mon 8/22: Pianist Jonathan Biss performs in his final of three performances at the Ravinia Festival (Green Bay & Lake Cook, Highland PArk), playing works from Beethoven including no. 14 in C-sharp Minor, the “Moonlight,” famous for its moody first movement, and no. 29 in E Major, the first of the last three late sonatas. Biss told the Reader that each recital is intended to reveal the “maximum breadth of form, language, and character” within the works while highlighting Beethoven’s tremendous transformation, which in his view is “probably greater than any artist, of any discipline.” 6 PM
Tue 8/23: Catch Prince’s quasi-autobiographical film Purple Rain during one of the last screenings of the Millennium Park Summer Film Series (Michigan and Randolph). 6:30 PM
8/23-8/27: The tenth annual Chicago Dancing Festival showcases local and national companies over five days of public performances at Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. 6 PM
Wed 8/24: The Great Love Debate tour ends its Chicago run at the Apollo Theater (2540 N. Lincoln) tonight, bringing together local personalities for a battle of the sexes in an attempt to answer the question: “Why is everyone still single?” 8 PM
Wed 8/24-Sat 8/27: Celebrate Turkish culture with live music, traditional food, and exhibits that shed light on the region’s history and heritage at Daley Plaza (50 W. Washington) at the Chicago Turkish Festival. 10 AM-6 PM
Thu 8/25: Author John Jodzio discusses his short story collection Knockout at City Lit Books (2523 N. Kedzie) with Lindsay Hunter (Ugly Girls) and Kathleen Rooney (Rose Metal Press). 6:30 PM
Through 8/28: News about the presidential election getting you down? Unelectable You at UP Comedy Club (230 W. North) attempts to find a comedic bright side. The Reader’s Dan Jakes writes, “a collaboration between Slate and Second City, this cathartic political revue vents frustration while managing to find joy in the 2016 election’s absurdities.” Thu-Fri 8 PM, Sat 4 and 8 PM, Sun 4 and 7 PM
