  • Chicago State University lays off 300 employees due to financial crisis

About a week after troubled Chicago State University received emergency funding from the state, the school was forced to lay off about a third of its staff, more than 300 employees. The staff cuts will save the financially strapped public university about $2 million a month. [Tribune]

  • April homicides up over 2015 but lower than first three months of 2016

There were 36 murders in April, a minor increase over the 35 murders that occurred in April 2015, according to Chicago police. But authorities are welcoming the number as a positive sign after the shocking 51 murders that occurred in January, followed by 43 in February and 45 in March. [Sun-Times]

  • The Obamas narrow down design submissions for presidential library Sunday

After a lauded performance during his final White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday evening, President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and staff members of the Barack Obama Foundation met in Washington, D.C., to go over design proposals for his presidential library. John Ronan Architects was the only Chicago-based firm chosen as one of seven finalists for the project. Construction on the south-side library is expected to be finished in 2020 or 2021. [Tribune]

  • Navy Pier transformation continues, with new hotel set to open in 2018

The most-visited tourist attraction in Illinois is getting its own hotel, the city of Chicago announced Sunday. Construction on the $90 million, 200-room hotel is set to start in 2017 on the east end of the pier. Officials didn’t say who plans to open the hotel. [DNAinfo Chicago]

  • Is Chance the Rapper dropping his third mixtape soon? Signs say yes.

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Chance the Rapper released his second and most recent mixtape, Acid Rap. Chance teased fans about the highly anticipated Chance 3 mixtape on social media by sharing a picture of what his followers speculated is its cover art. He’s also set to appear on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon Thursday, which fans think is a good sign that new music is going to drop soon. [NBC Chicago]
