Last Monday at noon Maysoun Rabie was in her (former) butcher shop on Kedzie when someone called and told her that her neighboring restaurant was ablaze. The fire, electrical in nature, gutted the entire front kitchen area of City Noor Kabab, spread along the ceiling, covered everything with a thick blanket of soot, and put one of the most special and unique Middle Eastern restaurants in the city out of business.
Rabie doesn’t know if her insurance will cover everything she needs to reopen. Pretty much everything was destroyed except her Koran, which she seems to interpret as a good omen. She says she’ll have a better idea about future plans in about a month or two.
I’ll be praying for her when I’m not rending my breast and gnashing my teeth.
