On first listen it sounds like New York’s Folkore Urbano plays a brassy strain of salsa, but there’s something different about the percussion. Leader and pianist Pablo Mayor is from Palmira, Colombia, and his sharp arrangements meld the band’s jazz-inflected dance grooves to the rhythms of his native land–from the ubiquitous cumbia to the marimba-driven currulao, a lesser-known tradition from the predominantly black population of the country’s Pacific coast. The band plays a free show tonight at the Old Town School of Folk Music. The show starts at 8:30 PM and reservations are suggested; call 773-728-6000.
