Today at 5:30 PM Doc Films will host a free screening of the 2007 Indian documentary Jashn-e-Azadi (How We Celebrate Freedom), an epic portrait of life in Kashmir. Director Sanjay Kak (who’s been making documentaries in India since the late 1980s) shot the movie over a three-year period, documenting numerous civilians trying to lead ordinary lives in spite of ongoing sectarian violence. (You can read the filmmaker’s extended synopsis here.) The film is the first in a two-part program organized in conjunction with the Smart Museum’s current exhibit The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India Since 1989. The second film, Jai Bhim Comrade (2011), plays at Doc next Tuesday at 5:30 PM. That movie is another long-form documentary about the history and culture of India’s untouchables.
