The third annual Brew Not Bombs fund-raiser combines home-brewed beer, vegan baked goods, and politically charged, dank-basement-dwelling, punk-as-fuck music at the Portage Theater from 4 PM until midnight this Sunday, September 19. The day’s festivities include a homebrew competition, a vegan bake-off, and lots of bands, many of whom share the DIY spirit the organizers hope to promote.
The impressive lineup features the mighty Marissa Paternoster and her band Screaming Females; Defiance, Ohio; Brooklyn duo Shellshag; solid locals the Arrivals; unforgettably named political folk-punks This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb; 97-Shiki; Slow Death; and Imperial Can. Dave Mata DJs, and previously unseen Everything Is Terrible! videos will be screening throughout.
Tickets are $10 at the door or at brewnotbombschicago.org, and all proceeds benefit “local groups working towards nonviolence and community justice,” like the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization, the Civilian-Soldier Alliance, and Voices for Creative Nonviolence.
Expect sleeveless jean jackets, back patches, bikes, and rowdy good times.
