I may or may not have been too mesmerized by the brand-new Reader design to post an Early Warnings roundup last week. That’s the excuse I’m running with, at least. It looks pretty damn good, huh? The print version of Early Warnings has gone through a bit of a transformation too, including a snazzy new look and a “sold out” category full of newly unattainable shows for you to get bummed out about each week.

The current issue’s Early Warnings aren’t a mind-melting selection of must-see-before-I-die bands, but there are several standouts, including an emo comeback special from Braid at Metro, hammock-lounging folksiness from the Great Lake Swimmers at SPACE in Evanston, hip-hop from People Under the Stairs at Subterranean, and Ravinia’s annual buffet of rockin’ fogey music, with concerts by Chicago, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Steely Dan.

Other notables include Digitalism at Congress Theater, Trevor Watts with Paul Metzger at the Empty Bottle, Yob with Dark Castle at Subterranean, and ZZ Top at the Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond. (I know that last one is far, but gambling away hard-earned cash and watching ZZ Top on the same night sounds kind of magical.)
