The eyebrow-raising announcement in this week’s Early Warnings is the lineup for the annual collaboration between the Wire and the Empty Bottle known as Adventures in Modern Music. This year’s installment has been christened “Edition Sonar” (it overlaps with the Chicago debut of the Sonar festival) and as usual the roster is extremely eclectic, not just from night to night but within each show—a tactic meant to encourage listeners to experience music very different from whatever they came out to see. Confirmed so far are Sleep, the Rhys Chatham Trio, John Wiese, Rangda, Efterklang, and Pocahaunted, among others.
The other new show announcements are nothing to sneeze at, though: they include eardrum thrashers AIDS Wolf at the Hideout, stoner/psych-rock outfit Black Mountain with the Black Angels at Metro, balls-out anthem rockers the Bronx at Double Door, chillwavers Neon Indian at Metro, and a stellar black-metal bill at Bottom Lounge that includes Behemoth, Watain, and Withered. There’s a little something for everyone.
