The Umbrella Music collective has announced a healthy portion of the lineup for the fifth annual Umbrella Music Festival, taking place November 3-7 at the Chicago Cultural Center, Elastic, Hideout, and the Hungry Brain. The ambitious festival of jazz and improvised music features an impressive cast of international players as well as local mainstays who’ve nurtured the burgeoning Chicago scene over the years. Artists confirmed thus far include David S. Ware, Gunter “Baby” Sommer, Xavier Charles, Mark Helias, Fredrik Ljungkvist, and Ellery Eskelin. A complete schedule will be available the last week of August.
On top of that a ton of good rock and pop shows go on sale this week, many involving bands you might’ve missed at Lollapalooza if you didn’t feel like making the 25-minute stroll from one end of Grant Park to the other one more time: the National with Owen Pallett at the Riviera Theatre, Wavves at Lincoln Hall, Matt & Kim at Metro, Gaslight Anthem at the Riviera, Jamie Lidell at Bottom Lounge, Walkmen with Japandroids at Metro, Social Distortion with Lucero at the Riviera, and more.
As usual, check out the rest of my list of notables after the jump:
