The Gap is known mainly for informal basics and casual interpretations of trends, so on Sunday I was surprised to find, amid the utilitarian striped tees and tote bags at the Michigan Avenue store, a chic top with fairly intricate pleating details, available in tan, blue, pink, or black. Marked down to $33.99 from $54, and then a further 25 percent discount on that, for a total of $25.49. Narrow around the shoulders and bust, a little wider around the bottom, but not so bubble-shaped as to make it look like you’re hiding a spare tire. In a light silk/cotton blend, it’s perfect for hot summer days (although, unless you’re more of an exhibitionist than I am, you’ll have to wear a tank underneath).
It’s not on the Web site anymore, so you’ll have to make do with my rudimentary photography skills.
