- Food trucks could be coming to O’Hare, Midway if Rahm gets his way
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing bringing food trucks to O’Hare and Midway International Airports. On Wednesday the mayor “introduced an ordinance that authorizes aviation commissioner Ginger Evans to establish areas at O’Hare and Midway where food trucks could remain without having to move every two hours, as is required on Chicago streets,” according to the Sun-Times. A legal battle over the city’s food truck laws has been going on for months (see the Reader‘s cover story this week), and alderman Proco Joe Moreno has already proposed an ordinance that would allow trucks to stay in the same location for six hours, tripling the current limit. - Judges are keeping the state running during the never-ending budget impasse
Illinois hasn’t had a budget deal since the summer 2015, but the state hasn’t entirely shut down. Judges’ orders have kept open Illinois secretary of state facilities and other state-run operations during the budget impasse, according to WBEZ. - Faculty, students: the University of Chicago isn’t doing enough to stop white nationalists
Many University of Chicago students and faculty are wondering why the school isn’t doing more to stop hate speech and white nationalists on campus, according to DNAinfo Chicago. White supremacist groups have recently been recruiting and hanging posters on campus, which is alarming members of the university community who spoke out during a community forum. “I want to reassure you we are incredibly concerned about these incidents on campus,” Regina Dixon-Reeves, the university’s Assistant Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, said at the event. “I am here to listen and hear the experiences you all have had and your suggestions.” [DNAinfo Chicago]
- The state GOP hosted a fund-raiser in honor of Rauner with tickets costing up to $40,000 Thursday night
The Illinois Republican Party hosted its yearly Governor’s Dinner fund-raiser at the Hilton Chicago for Governor Bruce Rauner Thursday night. Tickets started at $500 and went up to $40,000. [Tribune]
- Morgan Park High School can’t afford its state basketball championship rings
The Morgan Park High School boys basketball team won the Illinois Class 3A championship this year, but the school can’t afford to pay for the team’s championship rings. Money from the school’s basketball fund was used to travel to out-of-town games. Meanwhile, it costs thousands of dollars to buy the rings for the players, coaches, and managers, according to DNAinfo Chicago.
