This week Gene Siskel Film Center opens a two-week engagement of Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?, a feature-length animation by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) that illustrates his interviews with linguist Noam Chomsky. It’s the subject of this week’s long review. Please note that the Chuck Jones adaptation of Schopenhauer’s The World As Will and Representation has been cancelled.

We’ve got a special place in our heart for Ernst Lubitsch, whose Ninotchka (1939) screens this Sunday night at Film Center. And we’ve got new reviews of Antarctica: A Year on Ice, a documentary by a New Zealander who recorded his experiences working at a scientific research base; Bettie Page Reveals All, a documentary narrated by the legendary pinup model; Dredd, a 2012 adaptation of the British cult comic; The Ghosts in Our Machine, an uncompromising documentary about the emotional lives of exploited animals; I Am Divine, a portrait of the mild-mannered Baltimorean who became the raging bitch-goddess of the early John Waters movies; and Out of the Furnace, the latest from writer-director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), with Christian Bale and Casey Affleck as down-and-out brothers in working-class Pittsburgh.

Best bets for repertory: Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (2010), Friday and Sunday at University of Chicago Doc Films; Robert Siodmak’s Christmas Holiday (1944), Saturday and Monday at Film Center; Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (1951), Friday at Film Center; and Fritz Lang’s The Woman in the Window (1944), Saturday and Thursday at Film Center.

Last but not least, Troma Entertainment honcho Lloyd Kaufman comes to Music Box for midnight screenings Friday and Saturday of his latest opus, Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Vol. 1, plus 8 PM appearances at the Admiral Theater as part of the burlesque show Film Strip.
