Update: My apologies for the mistake, but as a reader has helpfully pointed out, Globalfest is on Sunday, January 11, not on Saturday.
The sixth Globalfest is this Saturday Sunday in New York. It’s a single-ticket event featuring 12 international (or at least internationally flavored) musical acts. Chicago’s own Occidental Brothers Dance Band International (pictured) are on the bill, which also includes radical Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq, rising Brazilian vocalist Marcio Local, New York chicha merchants Chicha Libre, Caribbean legend Calypso Rose, and Bollywood star Kailash Kher. The event has always been scheduled to overlap with the Association for Performing Arts Presenters conference, to give attendees an extra dose of international sounds.
The big news for Chicagoans is that for the first time folks outside New York can take in the music too. WNYC is presenting a live Globalfest webcast, beginning with preshow discussion at 5 PM Chicago time.
Today’s playlist:
Adriana Calcanhotto, Maré (Sony/BMG, Brazil)
Camille, Music Hole (Virgin, France)
Ambrose Akinmusire, Prelude (Fresh Sound New Talent)
Dengue Fever, Venus on Earth (M80)
Mamadou Diabate, Douga Mansa (World Village)
