About a week after Ibn Inglor released his New Wave mixtape in the fall, Complex published an interesting and detail-rich interview with the local rapper-producer. Inglor talked about living in Altgeld Gardens, getting a MacBook with ProTools with his financial aid package at Full Sail University, and producing under the name Mhone Glor with Brandon Mahone. One section that really stood out is what Inglor said about how he stays away from trouble:

Honestly, I’m a homebody anyways. I don’t vibe with people much. I don’t like being around a lot of people.

It’s so blunt and a little revealing, or at least that’s how I read it after listening to Inglor’s newest song, “Damaged.” It’s shot through with a rattling percussion pattern that sounds like a massive washboard being rapidly scraped with a pipe in a cavernous industrial complex—it’s hollow, shrill, and cold. Inglor’s hostile, near-barking voice adds terrifying tension to the track and helps him unlock the intense sense of abandon in his lyrics. That’s there from the start, when Inglor raps about his grandmother dying—she passed away a couple months ago, and Inglor tells me her death was part of what inspired him to make this song.

The loneliness Inglor evokes goes beyond her death, and I get the impression it’s a feeling Inglor knows well. He embraces it in his music, which is part of why “Damaged” is so powerful. It’s also got the same high-voltage industrial-music kick that helped make Kanye’s Yeezus compelling, a comparison that Inglor’s heard before—it comes up in that Complex interview—and one that’s difficult to ignore. “Damaged” is part of Inglor’s forthcoming New Wave 2, but the version that’ll appear on the mixtape is twice as long—this track is actually the second half of the full-length song. Given what he’s done here, I’m eager to hear the rest of the track and the mixtape, which is slated to come out next month.
