According to a report released today by the City of Chicago Office of Inspector General, Maggie Daley’s After School Matters organization was the recipient-of-choice for mandatory “public benefits” donations from developers receiving TIF subsidies (so well covered by our own Ben Joravsky), mostly in the ten-year period from 2000 to 2009. The IGO says After School Matters (or its Kid Start Program) “was named as a recipient in 59 percent of the agreements directing contributions to private non-profits.” In a statement released in conjunction with the report, Inspector General Joe Ferguson notes that, “When the public can’t see how their money is used to leverage benefits for private entities, we have a transparency issue.”
