24-year-old Chicago trumpeter Jaimie Branch and her group Princess, Princess will be performing this September at the fifth annual Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York. The acclaimed and adventurous festival, started by Dave Douglas, is an excellent survey of some of the best improvised music being produced today, and has become a key showcase for some of the most exciting horn players on the planet. Branch’s trio includes bassist Toby Summerfield and drummer Frank Rosaly; the music is fully improvised, but the trumpeter’s bracing mix of lyricism and textural exploration is driven by a strong rhythmic fire. The group will perform locally on July 23 at the Skylark.
