Artist Jake Longstreth is best known for his “Wabi Ranch” series of stark, wry paintings of chain stores, but he has a small, compelling online exhibit of baseball cards that got to me. Longstreth had the simple, clever idea of removing the picture from the card and removing the identifying team logos from the players’ hats, leaving the viewer to focus on the composition of the picture. Which, it turns out, is really quite moving. The picture of Roy Howell, a 3B/DH who played ten fairly undistinguished years with the Rangers, Blue Jays, and Brewers, is particularly haunting.
