Local cornetist Josh Berman is a mainstay of the local jazz and improvised-music scene. In addition to programming the Sunday-night series at the Hungry Brain he belongs to a long list of strong local bands: Jason Adasiewicz’s Rolldown, Fast Citizens, Chicago Luzern Exchange, Slow Cycle, Lucky 7s, Paul Giallorenzo’s Get In to Go Out, and Keefe Jackson’s Project Project among them.

A couple weeks ago he finally released his first album under his own name, Old Idea (Delmark). Tonight at the Hideout his fine quintet–with Adasiewicz on vibes, Jackson on reeds, Anton Hatwich on bass, and Marc Riordan on drums–plays the first of several release-related shows. I have a profile of Berman in this week’s Reader.
