In the past few years explosive drummer Ches Smith has been a ubiquitous presence, transitioning smoothly from his roots in the Bay Area’s experimental-rock scene—Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Xiu Xiu—to New York’s jazz and improvised-music scene, where he powers a growing number of rigorous, genre-averse combos, including bands led by Tim Berne, Mary Halvorson, and Marc Ribot. Lately he’s been stepping out more and more often, and it’s on his own that he arrives in town for a performance at the Hideout on Wednesday evening.
