We’re kicking off Giving Tuesday early this year! Your donation today will be matched up to $10K, doubling your impact! If you donate $50 today, the Reader will receive $100.
The Reader is now a community-funded nonprofit newsroom. Can we count on your support to help keep us publishing?
The artists and bartenders and scientists in Ben Steger’s documentary Left Field are searching.
They’re looking for new definitions for things like family, parenthood, work, success – and they find some of these redefined values together in an unlikely source: the goofy, anarchic, chemically enhanced adult kickball league at Humboldt Park.
Some commentators have dismissed the kickballers as suspended adolescents, as if that’s necessarily a bad thing. But thinking we’ve got the answers is a kind of death, and I think there’s a certain nobility in the search.
See my Feb. 26 cover story on Left Field. It screens Sunday at 5:30 PM and Monday at 6 PM at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St. $9.
