A few weeks ago I did a column on some of my favorite things to happen in music last year, and one of those things was the surge in popularity that African dance music has had with Western listeners.
Just in time to help out anyone who may have wondered what South Africa’s take on house music, kwaito, actually sounds like, Sharp Darts pal Spoek Mathambo of the DJ/production duo Sweat.X has posted a new mix tape called H.I.V.I.P on the group’s blog, and it’s full of the stuff. I can’t decide which is bolder: giving the mix that title, or including two Cabaret Voltaire tracks.
