Graze Magazine release party
Tonight the Smart Museum hosts the launch of Graze, a semiannual literary magazine. Like the current exhibition at the Smart Museum, “Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art,” Graze examines the cultural, political, and economic roles of food—no recipes or restaurant reviews. With a raffle and music by folk groups Tiger Cry and Rock Falls.
Fri 4/27, 8-11 PM, Smart Museum of Art, 5550 S. Greenwood, $10, includes a copy of the magazine and entry to the exhibit.
“The Sun Doesn’t Show Through the Mist Until Noon”
In her first show with Alderman Exhibitions, Christy Matson presents new work varying from small weavings in cotton and linen to a large-scale video collaboration with Chicago-based artist Ken Fandell. While the work is visually striking, the tactile elements are equally important. Matson, an assistant professor at the School of the Art Institute, explores the patterns and sequences found in both modernist aesthetics and ethnographic patterns.

Out of the Vault: The Spirit of America
This program features three films that focus on spirituality and religion in American culture, culled from Chicago Film Archives collections. The first is Pomo Shaman, which documents a Kashaya healing ceremony that took place on a reservation near Stewarts Point, California. The second, Holy Ghost People, depicts a Pentecostal service in West Virginia, and the third, Laudate, explores the inner life of a young boy choosing between the Benedictine community and a more modern lifestyle.
