In late January, local postpunk trio Meat Wave will finally be releasing new music, a follow-up to their out-of-control 2012 self-titled debut. The Brother EP, which will be out on the new, UK-based label Brace Yourself Records, is an odds-and-ends collection of old recordings, new songs, and demos for their next upcoming full-length. Today’s 12 O’Clock Track is a sample of Brother: a cover of “Mystery,” a classic tune off of Is This Real?, the 1980 debut from the Wipers. Meat Wave tackles the topsy-turvy, end-over-end banger with their signature pummel and bite, and the amped-up band is firing on all cylinders with this recording: the drums pound relentlessly ahead of the beat, the bass sings, and vocalist Chris Sutter adds piles of attitude to the hooks. This is one of the best bands kicking around town right now. Check their cover of “Mystery” out below.

On New Year’s Eve, Meat Wave will be opening for the Muffs at Reggie’s Rock Club, and on Sat 1/2, they’ll be headlining the Mutiny during the 2015 version of Ian’s Party.
