Cartoonist Lynda Barry comes to the School of the Art Institute on Monday, November 15, to present her new book, Picture This: The Near-Sighted Monkey Book.

Published by Montreal-based Drawn & Quarterly, Picture This is less a how-to than a why-not. While Barry offers plenty of helpful hints to get you going—like how to draw amoebas and branches—her main business is to laud the therapeutic benefits of the creative act.

Here’s Barry talking about the book on NPR’s Talk of the Nation: “Doodle Your Way Out of Writer’s Block.”

And in this Poetry Foundation video, “Lynda Barry sings Emily Dickinson, recites haiku, explains how poetry smells, and insists that memorizing poetry can keep you alive and well.”

A Picture This video after the jump. “Learn how to art with a monkey!”
