- Senator Kirk un-endorses Donald Trump
Senator Mark Kirk has decided to withdraw his earlier support of controversial presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. “After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world,” he said in a statement. The moderate Republican is facing a tough challenge from U.S. rep Tammy Duckworth, and the seat is considered one of the most vulnerable in the upcoming election. Kirk isn’t the only Republican senator refusing to support Trump; South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham won’t get behind his candidacy either. [Sun-Times]
- Former candidate for CPD chief job hired to help with police reforms
Followers of the search for a new Chicago Police Department superintendent may remember one of the three finalists: Anne Kirkpatrick, the former police chief of Spokane, Washington. Eddie Johnson was ultimately chosen for the position, but Kirkpatrick must have impressed the department—she’s now been selected to head the CPD’s Bureau of Professional Standards. The new bureau will oversee police reforms, and Kirkwood will be in charge of implementing suggestions from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Police Accountability Task Force. [Tribune]
- After four years, Children’s Memorial Hospital has been demolished
After closing four years ago and being at the center of a brutal aldermanic race last year, Children’s Memorial Hospital in Lincoln Park has finally been torn down. Seeing the long-abandoned building reduced to rubble was an emotional moment for former patients and their families, who gathered at the site Tuesday. - Famous rapper gets Chicago court hearing postponed due to violence concerns
The recent wave of gun violence is so severe that a famous rapper got a court hearing postponed because he’s concerned about a retaliatory shooting if he travels to Chicago. The Game, who is based in Los Angeles, is facing a $10 million sexual-assault lawsuit here, and the alleged victim didn’t oppose the request. The judge in the case hasn’t decided on a new date. [TMZ]
