I would have to say that I’m not so much a fan of Matmos as I am simply curious about what they get up to. For instance, I was surprised to read in the PR for the new Supreme Balloon that instead of making records out of perversely obscure samples they use straight-up solid state sounds, then I listened to the record once and my curiosity was satisfied.

So a trip all the way up to the Lakeshore Theater to watch them on Sunday is, for me, just a little too much work. A free in-store at Permanent Records, on the other hand, might get me out. They’re playing at 6 PM tomorrow. With Permanent’s proximity to the beats-heavy Wicker Park Fest south stage, you have the opportunity to catch a lot of high-quality electro good times on the cheap.

PS: I’m currently only partway through Matmos member Drew Daniel’s contribution to the 33 1/3 series, a deeply personal investigation of Throbbing Gristle’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats, but I already feel extremely confident in recommending it, even to people who aren’t particularly big TG fans. It’s that good.

PPS: Here’s the video for Matmos’s new “Exciter Lamp.”
