There’s plenty to do in Chicago over the long Memorial Day weekend. Here’s some of what we recommend:
Fri 5/26: LetherB+B (3656 W. Wrightwood) hosts “Hot Dog Architecture,” a display of prints by Ryan Duggan with drinks from Land and Sea Dept. and Old Style. 6-10 PM
Fri 5/26: Freelance Wrestling and UnderGround Wrestling join forces for Baderbrawl, a pro wrestling extravaganza at Baderbräu (2515 S. Wabash) complete with lots of beer. 8:30 PM
5/26-7/14: The Pride Arts Center (4147 N. Broadway) introduces its late-night series with 26, a sketch show inspired by the ABCs of Death anthology features 26 pieces (one for each letter of the alphabet) by local playwrights and improvisers including Sean Graney, Susan Messing, and David Cerda. Fri 11 PM
Sat 5/27: Celebrate active and veteran military members with one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation, kicking off at State and Lake. Noon
Sat 5/27: Legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks stops by the Chicago Theatre (175 N. State) to talk about his career and tell behind-the-scenes stories about the making of Young Frankenstein. A screening of the film follows. 3 PM
Sat 5/27: This edition of Solo Crowd’s storytelling show You Only Live Once More at Frontier (1106 W. Thorndale) features Kayla Anderson, Mitch Brinkman, Courtney Watters, and more. 11 PM
Sat 5/27-Sun 5/28: The indoor and outdoor Randolph Street Market at Plumbers Hall (1340 W. Washington) features more than 300 vintage, antique, global, and food vendors. 10 AM-5 PM
5/27-10/29: The Art Institute of Chicago (111 S. Michigan) features “Human_3.0 Reading List,” local-based artist Cauleen Smith’s collection of 57 reimagined, hand-drawn book covers.
Sun 5/28: Dust off your bike for the 16th annual Bike the Drive, the cyclist takeover of Lake Shore Drive. Check out bikethedrive.org for a map of starting locations. 5:30 AM
Sun 5/28: ChitChat: Hack Your Period at East Room (2828 W. Medill) features a Q&A with ob-gyn Gabby Aguilar, holistic healer Esther Kovac, and representatives from Surge for Water, an organization that builds toilets in schools for girls, educates on menstrual hygiene, teaches women and girls how to make pads, and works to break taboos in communities. 2-6 PM
Sun 5/28: Chicago rapper Femdot performs tonight at Schubas (3159 N. Southport). Leor Galil writes, “On the four songs he dropped as part of February’s (U)no, the final EP included in his 20/20 Hour compilation, Femdot gets as much out of the language and music at his fingertips as a kid squeezing a lemon to ensure his lemonade is the best on the block.” 8 PM
