Lenny Kaye, who compiled the paradigm-shifting garage rock compilation Nuggets and who was an original guitarist in the Patti Smith Band, offers a wistful meditation on New York’s CBGB, which is closing its doors next month, in the current Village Voice.
Speaking of memories, the parade of revived old-timers continues: Pentangle guitarist Bert Jansch, who I wrote about here and who has an excellent new album coming out on Drag City next month, will play the Empty Bottle on November 17. Fingerstyle guitarist Peter Walker, whose sole album, Rainy Day Raga, was released in 1967 on Vanguard, will play Chicago with younger fellow traveller Jack Rose on December 2 (venue TBA). A new collection called A Raga for Peter Walker, due in October from Tompkins Square, includes four new tracks by Walker, as well as tributes from the likes of Thurston Moore, Rose, Greg Davis, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Shawn David McMillen.
