Last year I reviewed After Dark by electronic duo Microfilm in one of my local release roundups. They’ve since relocated to Portland, but they’re still making high-quality dark, IDM-laced electro-house. Right now I’m listening to their new album, The Slingshot Orchestra, and it’s even better than After Dark–harder edged, with a heavier dose of EBM and a hint of Teutonic cruelty. Last time around I said they had a “perfectly uncouth formula,” but they’ve gotten a little more raw since then, and a lot weirder. Too bad they aren’t still around or I’d do a whole column on them.

Coincidentally, I have another local release roundup in the paper this week. Strangely enough it references goth night at Neo. I feel like that’s more than coincidence.
