I spent much of the past weekend having my mind blown by the box set Live in Europe 1967 (Columbia/Legacy), a bounty of recordings by the second Miles Davis Quintet (with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams). The set’s three CDs and a single DVD chronicle a handful of concerts in the fall of 1967, when the group was arguably at the peak of its powers. In fact, this collection—the inaugural volume in a Miles Davis “Bootleg Series”—might be the single best piece of evidence to support that claim.
