Do you want this? I have a copy of the final issue of the Chicago Daily News, in close to mint condition. Write me at firstname.lastname@example.org and let me know why. It used to belong to a pal who died this summer.
Last December on her blog Valjean McLenighan — author, reporter, videographer, advocate for Zimbabwean art — let everyone know she had lung cancer. Then she kept her friends posted on the good news (“My oncologist says I am her healthiest stage III patient”) and the lousy news (“They sent me home with a couple of oxygen tanks”). In mid-June friends had to take over the blog and that was pretty much it for the good news. Valjean died July 9.
Going through Valjean’s things, her friend Kate Green came across a wrapped copy of the final edition of the Daily News. It had been one of America’s greatest papers, but TV and suburbanization pretty much killed off all the urban PMs no matter how good they were, and the Daily News said good-bye on March 4, 1978.
I told Kate I didn’t deserve the copy myself — I already have one and I’m not even sure where it is, but I’d use my blog to find it a good home. Please let me know if you’re interested. And please visit Valjean’s blog and get to know its gallant original owner.
