Michael Miner flags a story from the Economist which notes that Canadian oil fields may be deemed “Nonconventional petroleum sources.” That’s where half of Chicago’s oil comes from, and the new designation could cut us off and create total chaos (which, as Miner points out, makes it less likely to happen).
Anyway, I mention this not only because you should read his post, but also because the great Canadian photographer and filmmaker Edward Burtynsky did an amazing A/V report on the Alberta oil sands for the Globe and Mail. Check it out, it’s jaw-dropping.
