Last week I mentioned that Dave Douglas spent time on his blog to discuss the need for a good history of creative music since the war in Vietnam. The discussion provoked Ethan Iverson, the wonderful pianist for the Bad Plus, into action. He posted a giant list, in chronological order, of great jazz records made between 1973-90, in part to dispel the notion that the era was a fallow period for jazz. Iverson invited readers to make their own submissions, and while he’s no longer accepting nominations, he has been listing a good chunk of the e-mails he received. Bloggers (and jazz writers) like Steve Smith, Darcy James Argue, and David Ryshpan have posted their own additions. I haven’t had time to look through my collection for what’s still missing. Any suggestions?
