I don’t need to remind you that we’re currently being bludgeoned by bad holiday music. I don’t think there could possibly be a worse time of the year to work in retail. If you’re looking for something better, cartoonist/musician Plastic Crimewave (aka Steve Krakow, who draws The Secret History of Chicago Music for the Reader) has posted a mercifully concise podcast of deliciously warped holiday fare on the Anthology Recordings Web site. The short opening track is by John Fahey but it quickly gets much more psychedelic from there. Among the other artists represented: Rotary Connection, the Sonics, and Vashti Bunyan. The whole 30-minute blast is appropriately lo-fi, and it sounds like Mr. Crimewave used a condenser mike from an old cassette recorder when he back-announces the tracks he’s played.
