- Rahm promises that Chicago will remain a “sanctuary city”
President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding from “sanctuary cities”—including Chicago—that offer safe haven to undocumented immigrants. But Mayor Rahm Emanuel promised Sunday that the city will remain one, according to DNAinfo Chicago. “Chicago has been a city of immigrants since it was founded,” Emanuel said in a statement. “We have always welcomed people of all faiths and backgrounds, and while the administration will change, our values and our commitment to inclusion will not.” [DNAinfo Chicago] [Politico]
- Five residents overdosed on heroin at north-side nursing home
Five residents overdosed on heroin at the Continental Nursing & Rehabilitation Center nursing home in February, and the facility is potentially facing more than $100,000 in fines. All of the people who overdosed at the north-side facility recovered, two of them only to use heroin again after returning from the hospital. [Tribune]
- Planned Parenthood’s services are in demand in Illinois after Trump victory
There has been a 50 percent increase in requests for birth control services at local Planned Parenthood offices since Donald Trump won the presidential election last week. Women are likely worried about the future of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act under a Trump administration, according to Katie Thiede, vice president of development for Planned Parenthood of Illinois. The organization has added more appointments in order to meet the demand. [WBEZ]
- Rauner releases income taxes, made more than $188 million in 2015
Governor Bruce Rauner released his income tax returns, which revealed that he made more than $188 million in 2015 and paid more than $50 million in income taxes. He made $58.3 million in 2014, the year he beat then-governor Pat Quinn in the gubernatorial election. [WBEZ]
- Oprah puts her last Chicago-area property on the market
Legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey has put her final Chicago-area property on the market. Winfrey has listed a four-bedroom home in suburban Elmwood Park that she purchased in 2001 (but never lived in) for $400,000. She decamped to southern California after her Chicago-based show ended, and has since sold two Gold Coast condos. [Tribune]
