If you happen to be in Orange County, CA, this weekend, drop by the Chance Theater (“your off-Broadway theater in O.C.”). Reader critic Jack Helbig will be there enjoying the west-coast premiere of The Girl, the Grouch, and the Goat, a musical he created with Mark Hollmann of Urinetown fame. Hollmann wrote the music and lyrics, and Helbig is responsible for the book based on Dyskolos (“the grouch”) by the ancient Athenian funnyman Menander. It concerns a nasty alter cocker who keeps a tight lid on both his beautiful daughter and the only working well in his drought-stricken town. The opening is Saturday, 8 PM, and Helbig will participate in an audience talkback Sunday . . . if you happen to be around. Chance artistic director Oanh Nguyen directs.
