Local throwback pop outfit the Lemons caught my ear in December with their debut, Hello, We’re the Lemons; their sunny, old-school garage-pop tunes are as sweet as the treats they sometimes sing about. Next Thursday the Lemons are gearing up to drop their first piece of wax—it’s a split seven-inch with Tokyo’s Teen Runnings (I’m told they’re quite big in Japan), and it’s coming out on Gary Records, which is corun by former Reader intern Robyn Chang. Fortunately you don’t need to wait till next week to hear these wonderfully catchy tunes, as we’re premiering the entire seven-inch. The Lemons made the first three tracks, and the last two tunes are by Teen Runnings—take a listen to it below!
The Lemons’ half of the split kicks off with the clap-happy “Lemoncita.” They recently released a video for the tune, which is a romp through a 3D-animated world populated with anthropomorphic hot dogs and cats on skateboards (it also rains pizza). Turns out there’s an interactive version of the video too, which we’re also happy to premiere! Unfortunately we can’t embed it here, but head over to this URL and start roaming through the psychedelic animated world of the Lemons using your arrow keys and mouse to navigate the scene.
If you like what you hear you can grab a copy of the seven-inch at the Lemons’ show on Fri 6/6 at the Burlington—they’re playing with the Yolks, Street Gnar, the Memories and Today’s Hits. If you can’t make it to the show you can also grab a copy from Bric-a-Brac or online from Gary Records’ site.
