Looking for something to do today? Agenda’s got you covered:

The eighth annual Black Playwrights Festival begins with an opening party honoring local actor and playwright Paul Oakley Stovall. The evening also includes performance readings of his most notable works, including Ape and Clear.

Water on Mars, the new album from Purling Hiss, “is a mix of loud-leaning 90s alt-rock (think Dinosaur Jr.), judiciously applied feedback, Marc Bolan glam, and, well, gnarly old Purling Hiss,” writes Kevin Warwick in Soundboard. Catch their set at Empty Bottle. Teepee and Axis:Sova open.

Julia Sweeney, the former Saturday Night Live cast member and current North Shore resident, discusses her collection of essays, If It’s Not One Thing, It’s Your Mother, at the Book Stall at Chesnut Court.
