The Residue Records Showcase is two days of hardcore punk at Township. Bands on the local label—Criaturas and Herds among them—will be screaming bloody hell along with acts like Austin D-beat disciples Impalers. Attendees leave with a free Residue EP. Today features a record fair sure to be stocked with obscure seven-inches.
Windy City hip-hop gets some of its due at the Chicago Hip-Hop Day Festival. B-boys and B-girls break it down with fancy footwork, emcees battle head-to-head, turntable masters scratch away, and graffiti artists create colorful murals down on Loomis between Carroll and Fulton.
The Gene Siskel Film Center’s 20th Annual Black Harvest Film Festival, the month-long series celebrating the black experience both in the U.S. and internationally, continues today with two events. A screening of That Daughter’s Crazy, a portrait of Rain Pryor, the biracial daughter of the late, legendary comic Richard Pryor, will also feature an audience discussion with the film’s producers and the actor herself. “Action! The Real Deal About Filmmaking: Money, Casting, Production, and Distribution,” a free panel aimed at budding filmmakers, is first-come, first-served.
