The brainchild of cartoonist and filmmaker Lyra Hill, Brain Frame ends its three-year run in style with a special 3rd Anniversary/Grand Finale show at Thalia Hall. The event kicks off with a tour of screen-printed posters from the series, which used music, puppetry, and performance to interpret comics and interactive art installations, and ends with a mega dance party. In between, the main event features seven new performances as well as new work from Hill.
United Nations, former Thursday front man Geoff Rickley’s current band, performs at Township. In Soundboard, Reader critic Leor Galil describes the group as “a bristling, political posthardcore outfit with a taste for smart-ass satire.” Also on the bill is Framework, who “meld vitriolic screamo barking, starlit postrock guitar, and nervy posthardcore drumming for a sound that’s colossal yet weightless.” Black Clouds and Droughts round out the lineup.
Medium Cool, a weekend celebrating design in Chicago, starts today with a pop-up exhibition of sculpture, jewelry, and other art objects at Western Exhibitions. The organizer, Ria Roberts, told the Reader she “aims to use the weekend to bring people in Chicago’s artistic community together and, hopefully, foster new creative endeavors.”
